In the prize winning documentary series ‘Van Dis in Afrika’, Dutch author Adriaan van Dis is on a quest to find parallels and contrasts between the current Western European societies. Since the 70’s, Van Dis has been involved in Southern Africa at a very personal level. He speaks Afrikaans, he knows the writers and poets and always kept a close eye on the political and social developments in this region.
What does southern Africa show us when it comes to problems and solutions in the fields of crime, health care, jobs and unemployment, education and religion? Can southern Africa be viewed as a laboratory for our ‘own’ future?
It is safe to say that I was the pivot of this compact production that was filmed in South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique over the course of 2 months. I (co-) researched & produced, scouted locations & characters and assisted director/ cameraman Hans Pool in putting together this 7-episode documentary series. Van Dis in Afrika won the prestigious Dutch TV award ‘The Nipkow Prijs’ in 2008.
